"My work flow is the following:
1. Image capture with iuVCR capturing software, capturing into AVI file. During capturing I use codec "Fastcodec" that is compressing video in the fly like any other codec, it is lossless codec, so no any quality loss is due to this compression.
2. Resulting size of AVI depends on the content, usually I have about 600Mb for 1200 frames 1280x1024 pixels AVI.
3. For processing in Registax I split AVI into BMPs using VirtualDub, and these BMPs are about 3.1Mb each.
4. Then I convert these 24bit color BMP into monochrome BMP, abd this reduce their size making it 3 times smaller. As the camera is b/w, this does not reduce anything in the image.
5. Then I load all the frames using drag-and-drop procedure, described in Registax manual. By this method I can load up to 10000 frames.
6. Data prepared as described, give me the highest speed of processing in Registax without any meaningful limitations of the data volume. Any AVI, especially compressed with codec, are processed much slower, converting to 8bit BMP also increases processing speed significantly.
Very important is also the size of RAM, as the processing speed is also increased when all data are cached and not reread from HDD every pass in multipoint alignment. I have received up to 40 frames/sec. in the stage in initial alignment for the set of 1800 images on the computer with 3Gb RAM."
